.The City Slickers have revived Square Dancing for the young people in Kamloops

They started up in the Fall of 1999 and are gaining more new members every year

The dancers enjoy the challenge of the moves, the up-tempo modern music, opportunities to make new friends of both sexes, and the chances to travel to festivals and special events.

Unfortunately the club is not meeting at this time due to lack of members

The City Slickers are a non-profit youth Square Dance group here in Kamloops

for boys and girls between the ages of 7 & l6.

We dance at

Valleviw Community Hall.

Our caller is Jim Dorman,

who has spent many years as a caller for young people's square dance clubs.

In l999, The Kamloops Square Dancers, an adult square dance club in our region, provided the 'seed money' to start this youth-oriented organization.

Many of the adult dancers continue to give their time to support the youngsters.

They are convinced that such a group can be of great benefit to the young people of our city and will introduce them to a very social recreation.

This organization is attractive to young people because of the fun, the modern upbeat music, the challenge of the dance, the opportunity to make new friends of both sexes and the chances to go places together.

Every December, the club travels to Delta, B.C.

to take part in 2 days of Christmas events hosted by The Delta Sundancers

(a teen & preteen square dance group which is 75 members strong.)

We get to meet young people from many of the other

teen & preteen clubs in Canada & the U.S.A.

Delta Sundancers have 2 big dances, a Christmas turkey dinner with all the

trimmings and a private evening at a giant indoor wave pool with water slides.

We even dance in the water and can then earn an 'Aqua-Duck' badge!

Our young people can be billeted with the families of the Sundancers

or they can stay with their own parents at a motel nearby.

Our Club also has the opportunity to compete in

The Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival

which is held every Spring.

The Festival has been held for many consecutive years in various places

in Canada and the United States and upwards of 600 young people attend every year.

Many lasting friendships are forged with youth dancers

from all over the Pacific Northwest.

Every Fall there will be a parent meeting held to inform you about Festival and then everyone can ask questions and see video excerpts of previous festivals.

Though The City Slickers has always done extremely well in the acquisition of trophies - our main reason to attend the Festival is because it is so much FUN!

From the adult perspective, this recreation is extremely wholesome for young people.

It offers excellent training in all the social graces.

Both boys and girls develop respect for each other.

Square Dancing is specifically about co-operation, teamwork and tolerance for others.

Many schools now are promoting youth square dancing as an antidote to school bullying with a lot of success!

It gives the young people an opportunity to develop strong social ties

which contribute to high self-esteem and a positive outlook on life.

It's also about moving smoothly to music after listening to the caller's directions.

( Parents will often agree that children could improve their listening skills! )

Square dancing also improves co-ordination and spatial abilities

so you will probably notice a change for the better in your child's schoolwork.

Youth square dance clubs are well known for being well-supervised

and are safe and trustworthy enviroments where young people can congregate

and learn leadership skills as well as enjoy an excellent social recreation.

We hope that your child will enjoy being a part of the Kamloops City Slickers.

This non-profit organization is completely run by volunteers

and as such we are always looking for more parent helpers.

Comments and suggestions are always welcomed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at any time.
